FTP Guide

File Transfer Protocol or FTP is a way to upload your files on to our server. This method
is different than e-mail because it allows you to send larger files at a faster speed. It's not difficult to use, but you are required to have an Internet connection,
a file compression utility and an FTP program. If you're files are less than 5 MG in size
you can upload them straight from your browser -- just click here!

If you would like to send a larger file from your desktop, make sure you have "What you need" (see below). When you're ready, call us at 352-372-2233 for your FTP program settings (i.e. login name and password). From there, we will retrieve your file and begin work on your document. Be sure to fax a hard copy or have a customer representative pick up a hard copy of your file to ensure that the transferred document looks exactly as you planned. What you need: 1. An Internet connection 2. A File Compression utility 3. An FTP program Internet Connection An Internet connection is the key to electronic file transfer between your work station and Renaissance Printing. Many companies have dedicated connections to the Internet, usually through a T1 or ISDN line. Others may use a dial-up connection for their Internet access. The higher your connection speed, the faster your file will transfer across the Internet. Contact your MIS department or help desk with your questions concerning your connection. Compression Utility When transferring a file electronically, it is important to compress the document. This process retains all file information but makes your file size smaller, saving time and server space. Once received, we will decompress the file to begin work. Most companies set a standard on what type of applications they install. Check with your MIS Department or help desk to find if your company has a preferred compression application. If you do not know which compression application to use, there are many sites on the Internet that offer free compression applications. Below is a list of popular compression clients for Windows and Mac based computers: Windows WinZip-www.winzip.com PKZip-www.pkware.com Macintosh Stuffit Expander - www.aladdinsys.com Dropstuff -www.aladdinsys.com Please remember: When creating compressed files on a Mac operating system, make the files self-extracting and bin-hexed. The above applications allow you to perform these two functions. Once you have compressed your file, you are ready to send it to Renaissance Printing for output. FTP Program As with the compression utilities, you may need to check with your MIS department or help desk to find out which FTP program you should use. If you do not have a specific FTP program, and need to obtain one, you may download the program from the Internet. There are many popular sites on the Internet that offer FTP programs. Click Here for a list of popular FTP programs and sites where they can be found.
